Bolted Flange Joints: Competency Isn’t Optional — It’s Critical

When it comes to pressurised systems, the integrity of bolted joints isn’t just a technical detail — it’s a frontline defence against leaks, loss of containment, and catastrophic failure. So training and competence is paramount.

The Energy Institute (EI) makes this crystal clear in Section 5 of its third edition ‘Guidelines for management of integrity of bolted joints in pressurised systems’;

“All personnel carrying out work on bolted joints shall be trained and competent for the roles and responsibilities allocated to them. Skills, knowledge and ability must be demonstrated to a level appropriate to the application and failure risks of the joint involved.”

So what does competency look like in practice?

✅ ECITB MJI 4-Stage Model — A rigorous pathway from training to technical testing and revalidation, ensuring individuals can safely dismantle, inspect, and reassemble joints using torque and tensioning techniques

✅ BS EN 1591-4:2013 — The British/European standard for qualification of personnel working on bolted flange connections

✅ ASME PCC-1 (Appendix A) — Guidance on bolted joint assembly procedures and training protocols

But here’s the challenge: with multiple standards, acronyms, and asset-specific requirements, it’s easy to get lost in the fog.

At Zulu Joint Integrity & Training Ltd, we help individuals and asset owners cut through the confusion.
Whether you’re a mechanical fitter seeking certification, a site manager navigating offshore compliance, or a training coordinator building an apprentice competency framework — we’ll walk you through the confusion and get you trained, certified, and on track with the right competency pathway.

The standards, rules and regulations are out there. But do you know what they are? — and more importantly, how to prove you meet them?

Let’s talk about your joint integrity journey. Let’s raise the standard. Let’s make competency visible.
