We’re all familiar with the phrase “white elephant in the room” – well how about the white elephant on site?
The phrase isn’t about an actual elephant, of course. It’s a metaphor for something huge and obvious that’s being ignored or avoided—often because it’s too uncomfortable or inconvenient to confront.
In essence, it’s about that glaringly obvious issue everyone pretends isn’t there.
The “white elephant” in terms of mechanical joint integrity can often refer to the glaringly obvious and critical need to adhere to industry standards and best practices for bolted flange joint integrity, which is being ignored or downplayed.
It’s like everyone in the room knows that skimping on these standards is a huge risk, yet no one is addressing it – of course ‘everyone in the room’ refers to senior management and all those persons who are responsible and accountable for undertaking their respective roles within a joint integrity process or procedure.
This negligence can lead to dangerous oversights and failures. So, it’s crucial to acknowledge and act on this ‘elephant’ to ensure safety and reliability. Ignoring it can result in catastrophic consequences.
I get to see the elephant quite often…do you?
